Standard

German Pinscher Standard

Head and Skull

Powerful, elongated without the occiput being too pronounced and resembles a blunt wedge in both frontal and profile views.  The total length of the head from the tip of the nose to the occiput is one half the length from the withers to the base of the tail resulting in a ration of approximately 1:2.

Expression

The German Pinscher is sharp, alert and responsive.

While the German Pinscher will always remain sharp and alert, it is customary when a judge attempts to test the German Pinscher's responsiveness by baiting them with their hand or something more enticing, the German Pinscher's loyalty to their owner will supersede their responsiveness and the judge will end up ignored by the German Pinscher.  This should not be faulted.

Eyes

The eyes are medium size, dark, oval in shape without the appearance of bulging.  The eyelid is tight and the eyeball non-protruding.

"Bug eyes" are non-typical to the German Pinscher and should be faulted as such.  Round eyes are non-typical as well.

Ears

The ears are set high, symmetrical and carried erect when cropped.  If uncropped, they are V-shaped with a folding pleat, or small standing ears carried evenly upright.

While the cropped ear is a man made appearance, the artistry should be attractive and suiting to the dog.  If the ears are left uncropped, it is important to be noted that button ears are not acceptable for German Pinschers.  A proper uncropped German Pinscher ear would appear like that of a Bullmastiff if they hang down, or a Pharaoh Hound if they stand up.

Skull

The skull is flat, unwrinkled from occiput to stop.  The stop is light but distinct.

The concentrating German Pinscher may appear with wrinkles on the forehead.  The focused German Pinscher should not be faulted for the temporary presence of wrinkles.

Muzzle

The muzzle is parallel and equal in length to the topskull and ends in a blunt wedge.  The cheeks are muscled and flat.

The German Pinscher should not appear cheeky.  The cheeks should not extend below the bottom jaw.  The cheeks should smoothly transition into the muzzle.  The muzzle maintains the same plane as the forehead.

Nose

The nose is full and black.

The nose should always be black.  Any other color on the nose other than black should be severely faulted.

Lips

The lips are black and close fitting.

It is essential that the lips of the German Pinscher fit closely to the teeth.  The top lips should meet the bottom lips, without extending below the bottom lips.  The lips must be black like the nose.

Bite

The bite is a strong, scissors bite with complete dentition and white teeth.  Faults - overshot or undershot bites, absence of primary molars.

It is not essential to have the German Pinscher open their mouth as is customary when examining the Doberman Pinscher.  Viewing the front and sides of the mouth provides adequate information to make a judgment on the mouth.

The foregoing description is that of the ideal German Pinscher. Any deviation from this is to be penalized to the extent of the deviation.
