German Pinscher Standard

Size
The ideal height at the highest point of the withers for a dog or a bitch is 17 - 20 inches. Size should be penalized in accordance with the degree it deviates from the ideal. Quality should always take precedence over size. Faults - under 17 inches or over 20 inches.
Size in German Pinschers indicates type. The German Pinscher is the medium sized Pinscher. If a dog or bitch falls outside the size range as stated in the German Pinscher standard, then it looms too closely to its larger or smaller cousins. As previously stated, the key to a German Pinscher is moderation, and a German Pinscher who falls within the prescribed size will be of moderate size, which is essential to proper German Pinscher type.
Proportion
The German Pinscher is squarely built in proportion of body length to height. The height at the highest point of the withers equals the length of the body from the point of the shoulder to the rump.
A square dog appears square. If it is short on leg, or long in back, or long on leg or short in back, it isn't square, and it isn't correct. A square dog is square. (See above).
Substance
The German Pinscher is muscular with moderate bone.
If a German Pinscher has the skeletal structure of a Miniature Pinscher, it lacks German Pinscher type. If a German Pinscher has the skeletal structure of a Doberman Pinscher, it lacks German Pinscher type. The skeletal structure of a German Pinscher is moderate, as moderate is the key to the breed!
The foregoing description is that of the ideal German Pinscher. Any deviation from this is to be penalized to the extent of the deviation.
